Who is considered a first time college student?

Students who have never attended a college or university are considered first time college students.

Additionally, students who complete college classes while in middle/high school (through College Credit Plus) are also considered first time college students after high school graduation.

New CCP Student

Complete the free COTC application (you may need to create an account first).

Home school students must apply for funding through the state of Ohio to participate in CCP. Students must email a copy of their funding letter from the state to COTC at ccp@mail.cotc.edu

Home school students must also provide a copy of school district communication recognizing student eligibility for home school instruction as outlined in OAC 3301-34-04. 

Home school students must have their parent send an official high school transcript with an unweighted GPA to COTC one of the following ways:

  • Emailed directly from the parent to cotcrecords@mail.cotc.edu
  • Mailed to COTC, The Gateway – Student Records, 1179 University Drive, Newark, OH 43055. 

Policy changes have been made by the State of Ohio due to COVID-19. New students for the 20-21/21-22 school year are eligible to participate in CCP if they have a high school (unweighted) GPA of 3.0 or higher. 

COTC is providing placement testing for students on a limited basis for eligibility and admission consideration to CCP. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we prefer to test students remotely; however, some on-campus testing is available if needed. Connect with an Admissions Representative to determine whether you need placement testing: ccp@mail.cotc.edu

Continuing CCP Student

Testing Center

Central Ohio Technical College’s Testing Center provide accessible, secure and confidential testing services to both students and community members in an optimal testing environment. We strive to preserve academic integrity and support the academic mission of excellence held by COTC. This is accomplished by adhering to the National College Testing Association’s Professional Standards and Guidelines.

Steps to Apply and Join our Team

  1. The first step to joining our teaching team is to view job postings on the COTC employment website, then complete an online application for the position you’re qualified for and interested in. Note: Applications will remain on file in Human Resources for up to 12 months.  

    • If you are a high school teacher interested in teaching a College Credit Plus (CCP) course at your high school, please complete the dual enrollment instructor application.
  2. As part of your application, please be prepared to include unofficial transcripts for all education you’ve completed and are currently pursuing. Also include a resume, CV or be detailed in your teaching application about your professional experience.
     
  3. Your application materials and transcripts will be reviewed and a brief telephone or Zoom interview may be scheduled. Application review typically occurs three times a year about six to eight weeks before the start of each semester. Our COTC semesters begin in August, January and May.

Frequently Asked Questions

I applied to COTC. Is that the same as applying to the practical nursing program?

No. The practical nursing program is a competitive, selective healthcare program. Students first apply to COTC (the college) and indicate interest in a health technologies program (or apply to a pre-health track). Then students complete a separate application to apply to the practical nursing program.

How do I learn about the application process for the practical nursing program?

What are the requirements to apply to the practical nursing program?

Pre-requisite classes must be completed

There are classes students must take, have taken or can be awarded transfer credit for before they can apply to the practical nursing program. You must have one of the following: 

  • A full unit of high school biology or Introduction to Human Biology
  • Higher college equivalents
  • Approved COTC transfer credit for human biology or Anatomy and Physiology I

Students who have taken the courses or receive transfer credit for the courses must have received a grade C or higher. 

Health Selection Exam

Students must complete the HESI exam for the Practical Nursing program. View more information about the HESI exam, how to register, and the cost here.

STNA

Provide verification (card or registry number) of current status as a state tested nurse aide (STNA). The COTC course that provides eligibility for STNA testing is NURS 002 Basic Health Care Skills.

Transcripts

Students must submit official high school transcript with graduation date or official GED transcript. High school seniors must send a current transcript during their senior year and a final transcript after graduation. Additionally, official transcripts from all career centers, colleges, and universities attended past and current with GPA must be sent. ALL foreign transcripts (high school and colleges) must be evaluated by a NACES Member- www.naces.org.

When are applications for the practical nursing program available/due?

Applications are typically available one month prior to the deadline. Request the application from your assigned advisor or email cotcadvising@mail.cotc.edu.

Applications due dates based on campus location:
Newark:
  • June 1 (Autumn semester start — typically late August)
  • Oct. 1 (Spring semester start — typically early January)
Coshocton:
  • Oct. 1 (Spring semester start — early January)
Knox:
  • Feb. 15 (Summer semester start — mid-late May)
Pataskala:
  • June 1 (Autumn semester start — late August)

Are there additional requirements if I’m accepted into the practical nursing program?

CPR

Students must have a CPR—American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Certificate for clinical sites upon being selected into the program.

Can I take classes online or face-to-face?

Students will be required to take classes on campus for the practical nursing program. Some general education courses may be available online, but students should plan to be on campus to use equipment and engage in hands-on learning.

Can I pursue an associate degree after I complete the practical nursing certificate?

Students interested in pursuing an associate degree to become registered nurses after completing the practical nursing certificate have the option to apply to our LPN to Associate Degree Nursing transition program. 

What type of financial assistance is available to help me pay for college? 

COTC awards more than $1 million in scholarships to students each year.

Every student is encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for grants, scholarships and loans. 

Students who complete a FAFSA are automatically considered for some scholarships. Other scholarships require an application.
