A phlebotomist inserts a needle into a patient's arm.

Overview

Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, transfusions, research or blood donations. They primarily work in hospitals, ambulatory centers, clinics, medical and diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and doctors’ offices.

With this certificate you can begin working in healthcare right away. You will also be prepared to continue your education with COTC’s Associate of Applied Science in Health Services Technology.

Certification Eligibility

In addition to classroom and laboratory requirements, graduates of the COTC phlebotomy program complete 50 hours of hands-on clinical experience and are eligible to sit for the National Certified Phlebotomy Technician (NCPT) exam through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

How quickly can I complete the phlebotomy certificate?

This certificate may be completed in just one semester.

Can I take classes online or face-to-face?

The phlebotomy certificate curriculum comprises both an online lecture, and on-campus lab and an on-site clinical.

What classes are needed if I want to become a National Certified Phlebotomy Technician?

You must complete:

  • HLT 140 – Phlebotomy
  • HTL 145 – Phlebotomy Lab
  • HLT 150 – Phlebotomy Clinical

What financial assistance is available to help me pay for college?

COTC awards more than $1 million in scholarships to students each year.

Every student is encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for grants, scholarships and loans. Students who complete the FAFSA are automatically considered for some scholarships. Other scholarships require an application.
