Patrick Courtney stands in a hallway.

Assistant Professor Patrick Courtney has been teaching at COTC since 2003, but his teaching history dates back to 1978. Prior to COTC, he was a secondary school teacher and administrator as well as a district administrator. He now teaches at all four COTC campus locations and online.

What classes do you teach?

PSY 100 Introduction to Psychology addresses all the areas of psychology concerning human behavior.

PSY 200 Abnormal Psychology addresses the many differing psychological disorders noted in the DSM 5, their factors and treatments.

PSY 210 Developmental Psychology which addresses the areas of physical, cognitive and psychosocial development as they occur across the different stages of life.

Why should students study psychology?

The study of human behavior addresses any of the majors at COTC as each has their own part of working with people to help them in some specific way.

Why did you become a professor?

I was drawn to education as a way to connect with future generations of people to help them find ways to improve the society in which we all live in together.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at COTC?

COTC is a unique place which reaches out to help people find their way in society.  To find some field in which they can succeed, support their families and have a positive influence on their respective communities.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Continuing to be energized to fully engage with students after more than 40 years in the field of education.

What advice do you have for students?

Don’t ever give up.

In what way do you, support students in achieving their certificate or degree?

Finding new ways to continue to challenge each semester of students to find themselves in this opportunity to move forward in life.

What interests, hobbies or talents do you have outside of the classroom?

I spend time reading novels by W.E.B. Griffen, Tom Clancy as well as classic works from the history of literature of man.  I enjoy attending baseball games and other sports during the year.  I also enjoy writing.
