Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant (IASG)

Post

The Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant (IASG) is a federal grant available to students who are not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant solely because they do not meet the Pell Grant’s Student Aid Index eligibility requirements, but who meet all other Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.

A student may be eligible for an Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant if:

  • Their parent or guardian died as a result of military service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan after the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
  • They were under the age of 24 or enrolled in college at least part-time at the time of their parent’s or guardian’s death.
  • They meet all other general federal student aid eligibility requirements.

The maximum Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant award is equal to the maximum Federal Pell Grant award for the applicable award year, adjusted as required by federal law. The actual amount awarded depends on the student’s enrollment status and the cost of attendance.

Students do not need to submit a separate application for the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant. Eligibility is determined through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) and information received from the U.S. Department of Education.
