Thirteen years after starting a degree at a different college, Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) student Jacob Ward is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in Digital Media Design Technology to redefine his career.

“I like the idea of creating and bringing something to life for someone,” he said. “I’d love to work with a sports team to help develop their website or help design their merchandise.”

Ward began working on his degree in spring 2021 with the full support of his wife and three kids.

“When I first talked to my wife about going back to school, she was really excited and 100% supported my decision,” he said. “The kids have been great too. Always asking about any homework I have or asking how class was. I just wanted to show them that it was never too late to go to school and that even while working I could still do it!”

COTC was the perfect choice for him because of the proximity to his home, the flexibility of course offerings and the affordability. Like many COTC students, he is juggling parenthood, a job and his education.

“I currently work for Ariel Corp in Mount Vernon. I work the weekend night shift there. The shift that I work allows me to pursue my degree,” Ward said.

From enrollment to academic advising to the classroom, his experiences as a student at COTC have been positive so far, and his GPA during his first semester earned him a spot on the Dean’s List.

“The small class sizes, staff and professors have been amazing so far,” said Ward. “My academic advisor has been helpful, answering all my questions, no matter how big or small.”

He plans to complete his degree in 2023.
