ONGSP will pay the base tuition only (general and instructional fees) for Ohio state-assisted colleges and universities. Any additional fees such as lab, course or assessment fees are student responsibility. For approved private or proprietary degree-granting institutions of higher education, the program will pay 100% of the average tuition charges of state universities. ONGSP is not available for courses not applicable to or leading to an Associate or the member’s first Baccalaureate degree with the exception of diploma-granting nursing programs.

Please check here for FAQs about using ONGSP Education Benefits

ONGSP scholarships are available for both full-time and part-time students who are actively enrolled in at least three (3) credit hours or more of coursework. Accumulation of eligibility units is based on actual attendance. The program is limited to a total of 96 accumulative units which requires a 6-year enlistment or 48 units for a 3-year enlistment.

Participants must meet and maintain all military training requirements and the terms of their enlistment obligation. If the member fails to meet the terms of their enlistment obligation, their application may be denied until back to an eligible status with their command unit and they will be liable to repay the state for a pro-rated amount of tuition paid on their behalf.

Enrollment Process

Go to the new Ohio National Guard Scholarship Website.

Follow the instructions in the ONGSP New User Guide and ONGSP Student Handout to set up your account and how to submit your application to the school. All applications are approved by your Unit Reviewer and you must be in good standing with your command unit for approval.

The deadline for submission of ONGSP applications is the first day of classes. An application must be submitted and approved for each semester you are wanting to use your ONGSP benefits.

If you are experiencing any issues activating or logging into your account, please review this document, account activation troubleshooting,  for FAQ and contact information for ONGSP office.

Depending on the branch of OHNG serving, they may also be required to use Tuition Assistance (TA) for one semester of the federal fiscal year (October to September) each year to avoid having benefits rescinded. One exception is if the student is also using Montgomery Chapter 1606 Reserve GI Bill benefits in conjunction with ONGSP. Ohio Air National Guard members are not eligible for TA. Review this ONGSP and TA Handout for more information.

Military Tuition Assistance (TA)

Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is available as a financial aid resource for qualified service members serving in the Air Force, Army & National Guard, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy. The TA funds are paid directly to the institution to be applied to the student’s tuition cost. It is considered a first payer before Federal Title IV Financial Aid and can be used in addition to financial aid.

Participants must meet and maintain all military branch of service requirements and the terms of their enlistment obligation. If the member fails to meet the terms of their enlistment obligation, their application may be denied until they are back to an eligible status with their command unit. Failure to maintain academic requirements set by TA may result in service member being required to repay TA funds back to the military/DoD.

The service member is required to receive approval from their NCO or ESO, military counselor or service unit prior to enrolling in classes at COTC. Application submission for approval must be before the course start date. Contact your NCO or ESO for application submission deadlines.

Each branch of service has its own criteria for eligibility, the application process, max amount per fiscal year, and qualifications for approval. Please see the chart below and click on links for additional information

Once the application is approved, the student will receive a tuition authorization approval which must be submitted to Student Financial Services before the first day of classes each semester. The last day to submit the authorization to the Student Financial Services is the first Friday of classes each semester. COTC must have the tuition assistance authorization voucher on file to invoice for tuition assistance for each approved class. COTC requires students to be reported as attending class(es) before submitting tuition authorization for approval during the fifth week of the semester.
