HESI Exam Information

HESI A2 stands for the Health Education Systems, Inc., Admissions Assessment. HESI serves as an entrance exam for health related programs. Please allow at least four hours for the exam. 

Students are allowed unlimited retakes, but only the most recent score will be taken into consideration. There is no mandatory wait time between attempts. Scores remain valid for one year. Scores are due by the application deadline for your program of interest. 

You MUST arrive 30 minutes early. Applicants who do not arrive at least 30 minutes early may not be able to test. You MUST bring a non-expired photo ID (student, driver’s license, etc). Testing will not be allowed without one. 

Sections on the HESI A2 Exam

Basic Math Skills

You will be tested on topics including performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on whole numbers, fractions, percentages, and decimals. There will also be questions on converting decimals to fractions as well as fractions to decimals. You will also need to understand ratios and proportions. There will also be questions on general math skills. These will include things like balancing a checkbook, understanding common measurement units, and being able to read a medicine bottle label for the correct dosage.


This section will test your knowledge of cells. This includes topics related to cells such as: cell theory, cell structure, cell composition, organelles, DNA, RNA, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and cellular functions such as cellular respiration. You will also need to understand photosynthesis.


This section will test your knowledge on topics such as matter, the structure of atoms, the states of water and other elements, the periodic table, as well as some chemical reactions. 

Reading Comprehension

This section will test your ability to read and understand written text. You will be tested to see if you can figure out what the author’s main idea is. You will also be asked to identify what category a written piece is from categories including narrative, technical, persuasive, and others. 

Vocabulary & General Knowledge

This section will test how large of a vocabulary you have as well as your ability to determine the meaning of words through context/knowledge of words’ roots. The vocabulary section will use both medical and non-medical terminology. 

COTC HESI Testing Locations

HESI A2 exams will only be available in-person. Exams can be taken at any COTC campus. Scores can be sent from any testing location as long as they meet the following criteria:

  1. It must be administered in-person. No remote exams will be accepted.
  2. The test must have exactly the same subjects our HESI A2 covers - no more, no less. That is:
    1. Reading Comprehension
    2. Vocabulary & General Knowledge
    3. Basic Math Skills
    4. Biology
    5. Chemistry
  3. The scores must be sent to so we can verify them.

How to Register

Create an Evolve Account and Login

  • Sign into your account. If you don’t have an Evolve account, you can create an account by clicking on “Sign in” and choosing “Create account” from the drop-down menu:

Register for the Exam

  • Under the box that says HESI Secured Exams, click on the link Register for Results and Remediation

  • Click on the orange “register” button

  • Now click on the orange “redeem checkout” button

  • Fil in your information and click “continue”

  • Accept the agreement by clicking on the box and then submit

  • Click on the My Evolve link in the green box to go to your HESI Student Access

How to Make a Payment

  • Now you are ready to place the order.  In Evolve, click on your “HESI Assessment Student Access” link:

  • Click on the “Payments” tab and fill out the information on the Payment form below and click “proceed to checkout.”  Enter Payment ID ______: . 

    • Radiological Science, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and Surgical Technology
      • First time test takers applying for a these programs will use Payment ID “24293.”
      • Second time test takers applying for a these program will use Payment ID “24294.”
    • All other programs (including nursing):
      • First time test takers applying for all other programs will use Payment ID “24282.”
      • Second time test takers applying for all other programs will use Payment ID “24283.” 

  • The HESI A2 exam cost $53.
  • Fill out the credit card info on the screen below and you will receive a confirmation order receipt.
  • Bring your receipt with you on your testing date.

Register Blast - Schedule Online

  • Select “HESI A2″ from the “Choose a Group” menu
    • Please make sure you select the correct campus that you wish to test at
  • Select “HESI A2″ from the “Choose an Exam” menu
  • Select one of the available dates/times from the posted HESI A2 Exam Exam dates
  • Please enter and verify your name, phone number, and COTC email address
  • (Optional) Check the box if you would like updates texted to your cell phone
  • Carefully read the Exam Guideline Acknowledgement and check the box
  • (Optional) Add any additional information in the “Needed Information” box
  • Click “Add to Cart”
  • You will be taken to a new screen. Click Complete Registration. You will receive a confirmation email.

Upcoming HESI Testing Dates

When deciding a test date, it is important to allow yourself time to re-test if needed. Waiting too long to schedule a test may result in only having one opportunity to take the HESI A2.

Testers with Accommodations 

Students requiring disability accommodations should contact the Testing Center Coordinator for further instructions on scheduling.  Students who wish to utilize disability accommodations must have already met with the Office for Disability Services.  If you have testing accommodations through the Office for Disability Services, you must contact the Testing Center before you schedule your HESI A2 exam to be sure that the necessary accommodations can be provided on the day you plan to take your test.  Failure to contact the Testing Coordinator ahead of time will result in testing accommodations not being available on the day of the test.

Getting a good score on your HESI test will increase the odds of you getting into your health program. Reading study material and taking practice tests can help you score highly on your test.
