DMS Application Requirements

The DMS program is a competitive, selective program. There are enrollment requirements in addition to the COTC admission application. Students must submit a DMS program application and supporting material to be considered for admission to the program. The deadline to apply to the DMS program is May 1.

Apply for admission to COTC.

Complete the free COTC admission application at cotc.edu/apply. Indicate interest in a health technologies program (or apply to a pre-health track).

Submit official high school transcripts or GED and college/university transcripts (if applicable).

Submit official transcripts from all the schools you attended:

  • Mail to The Gateway – Student Records, 1179 University Drive, Newark, OH 43055
  • Email directly from high school personnel to cotcrecords@mail.cotc.edu

Attend a DMS Information Meeting.

Learn about the DMS program and application requirements at an information meeting. You must attend before applying to the DMS program (attendance valid for 12 months).

Complete the Sonography Information Course.

DMS Canvas Course card A Sonography Information Course is available to anyone interested in the DMS program at COTC. This course will provide information and hopefully answer many of your questions on the ultrasound profession, program requirements and application process.  The information course will take less than 1 hour to complete and can be accessed multiple times.

Once you been enrolled at COTC and have begun the application process for the DMS program, complete this information course again in its entirety. Completing this information course is a required component of the DMS Application Process. Upon completion of the information course, your information will be submitted to the Gateway to document your completion.

Complete the prerequisite courses.

Before applying to the DMS program, you must complete two courses with a grade of C or higher.

  • A full unit of high school Biology or Intro to Biology (BIO-010) and high school Chemistry or Intro to Chemistry Principles (CHEM-020), or higher college equivalents, or approved COTC transfer credit for Anatomy & Physiology I (BIO-130).
  • College Algebra (MATH-140) or transfer credit equivalent
  • Elementary Physics (PHYS-105) or transfer credit equivalent

If you have taken these classes at another college or university and received a grade of C or higher, you may receive transfer credit for the courses.

Take HESI exam.

The HESI exam assesses your preparedness for entering a healthcare program. Your score is a significant factor in the selection process.

HESI exam scores are good for 12 months. The HESI exam may be taken multiple times, but only the most recent score will be the one considered as part of your sonography application. There is a fee to take the HESI exam.

The deadline to apply to the sonography program is May 1 each year.

If you are selected, you will have to complete additional steps prior to admission. More information will be provided after selection. 

  • Complete FBI background check.
  • Complete a drug screening.
