Tutor Request Form
SMARTHINKING
* All individuals
newly hired as a tutor for the Tutoring Center must complete Level I
Workshops and the test for each workshop. The links for the different
workshops are listed below and must be completed in the order listed.
When you complete a workshop please go to the Tutoring Center to
complete the required test for that workshop.
Individuals
completing this training on extended campuses may contact your
respective Tutor Liaison to make arrangements for testing. You may take notes while
watching the videos and may use the notes during testing. Each test will
be closed book and you must make 80% or higher on each test to be
allowed to tutor.
Free tutoring is one of the most popular programs. This program
places students wanting to be tutored with a
tutor who has previously taken the course and received a "B"
or better. A faculty member must sign a competency form before a student
will be trained as a tutor. A sample form is on the following page.
A student wishing to be a tutor may bring this form to you, or it may
be sent from the Tutoring Center office asking you to consider a recommendation.
Your prompt attention is the key to our providing timely service to
the students.
If we are short of tutors, faculty are contacted for suggestions of
possible tutors, or to make an announcement in classes encouraging good
students to become tutors. Tutors are paid and can arrange their own
work schedules. Students who tutor report many benefits.
The Tutoring Center is open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through
Thursday and 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Fridays. Contact the Tutoring
Center for hours of operation during summer quarter.
Faculty, advisors, and staff involvement in this program is critical to how successful
tutoring is for students. Encouragement given to good students to consider
tutoring, completing tutor competency forms, and taking time to talk with
employed tutors about educational goals can increase the strength and
worth of the tutoring experience for peer tutor and student alike.
Room 52 in Hopewell Hall is the hub of tutoring activity on campus. OSU-N
and COTC students learn from peers about how to be more successful in
class. Tutors share information about course content as well as teach their tutee how to
study for certain types of tests. Over the years, the Tutoring Program
has become one of the most popular student centered programs on the Newark
Campus. Hundreds of students have been employed as Peer Tutors and
thousands more have received free tutoring.
Students work together to learn concepts, study for tests, plan
projects, complete assignments and generally figure out how to make the
most of the classroom experience.
TUTORS are students and instructors employed to work at hours they arrange, before and
after classes. They are recommended by faculty to be tutors and trained to
be effective as one-to-one communicators.
Students requesting tutors select which hours are most convenient for them. Requests can be made for tutoring in any subject. Assignments are
made on a first-come first-served basis according to tutor availability.
Two hours a week are scheduled for each class, but more hours can be given as
needed. Tutoring is FREE to all students.
Any requests that are received before the first week of classes will
be assigned after classes begin during the first week of the quarter,
and they will be made daily thereafter. If you do not receive an e-mail
from us on or before the 4th school day after filling out a request (
with the exception of the first week of classes) please contact the
Tutoring Center Staff.

"Because my tutor had the same teacher, he showed me how to study
for tests and I wasn't so up tight about tests after a while."
"I am glad I became a tutor. It really helped me be a better
student too. And it gave me work experience for my resume'."
