This course prepares basic health care workers with the skills required by the Training and Competency Evaluation Program (TCEP) prior to gaining eligibility to become a State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA) for employment as a home health aide. The course content includes communication, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, promoting residents’/clients’ independence, respecting residents’/ clients’ rights, basic nursing skills, personal care skills, providing care in a home setting, mental health and social service needs, and basic restorative services.

State-Tested Nurse Aides may choose to work in long term care, assisted living facilities or hospitals. In order to work in these fields, students may need to pass the state STNA test which is not part of the program. STNA provides basic health care needs for patients under the direction of an RN or LPN. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment of nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants is expected to grow by 20 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations.
