What Is the Ohio Work Ready Grant?
Eligibility, Award Amounts and COTC Programs
Whether you’re a high school senior considering your career for the first time or a working adult looking for a way to boost your income and job stability, the Ohio Work Ready Grant (OWRG) could reduce the cost of a professional certificate, associate degree or bachelor’s degree. The OWRG awards grants to Ohio students who enroll in approved programs that lead to careers where Ohio has identified a need for more employees. For some Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) programs and students, the OWRG can even bring the total you owe down to zero.
What Is the Ohio Work Ready Grant?
The Ohio Work Ready Grant (OWRG) provides additional funding to students pursuing degrees and work credentials that will help them enter certain in-demand jobs. In an effort to boost Ohio’s workforce, the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation has identified certain programs in colleges across the state that will help fill job openings in manufacturing, engineering, healthcare, technology and more.
The grants offer up to $6,000 to eligible students per academic year, depending on the specific program you’re enrolled in and how many credits you’re taking. Full- and part-time students are both eligible. For short-term certificates and industry credential programs, funding tops out at $3,000 per program.
Who Is Eligible for the Ohio Work Ready Grant?
To qualify for the OWRG, you need to meet these requirements:
- Be an Ohio resident
- File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on time
- Demonstrate financial need through Pell Grant eligibility
- Enroll in an Ohio Work Ready Grant-approved program
As of 2026, the OWRG’s current iteration includes dedicated funding for certain “technician-aligned academic programs” leading to jobs in advanced manufacturing and engineering technology. Under the new structure, every student pursuing one of these designated programs is considered for the OWRG grant — regardless of financial need — as long as they file the FAFSA.
Benefits
- Cost Savings: Between the maximum OWRG and the maximum Pell Grant award ($7,395 for the 2026-2027 school year), students from low-income households can receive up to $13,395 each school year for technician-aligned programs or $10,395 for other approved programs, covering most, if not all, costs for attending COTC full time.
- In-Demand Credentials: By enrolling in an OWRG-approved education program, you’re taking the first step toward an in-demand career in the state of Ohio, increasing your financial stability and earnings for the future.
- No Separate Application: There’s no separate application process for the OWRG. Any eligible student who files a FAFSA will be automatically awarded the correct grant amount. Students in designated technician-aligned programs must still submit a FAFSA, even though their financial need will not be taken into account.
