Welcome to Autumn Quarter!

ITS welcomes you back to campus.  As usual, we have been very busy over the summer; adding 20 laptop connection rooms, launching TechConnect, and adding more information to the website.

Please take a few minutes to carefully read this email.  I have bookmarked it for your convenience.

Laptop Connection Rooms

We have installed projectors in the ceiling, DVD/VCR players, speakers and laptop connections in 20 rooms on campus.  To review all the multimedia capabilities on campus, visit:  http://www.newarkcampus.org/its/multimedia/

Click on any building on campus and see the rooms highlighted in green or labeled Laptop Connection room.  By clicking on the room, you can see a picture of the room and a link to instructions for it.  Bring your laptop with your presentation materials to the room, connect the cables, plug in your power cord and go!  All these rooms are wireless, so logon to the wireless to present any information on the internet.

You may be interested to know that we now have 52 rooms on campus with technology available in them.

H Drives

The “H” drive or Home drive is available on the server to allow you to store important data in a safe place.  Please back up all your important data to the H drive.  If your computer crashes, your data will be safe.  If you have any questions about saving to your “H” drive, please contact the Help Desk at X244.  However, space on the server for storage is limited to allow everyone on campus to use it.  We are asking that you limit the amount of data you store on H to 1 gig.  If you are over 1 gig, I will contact you and ask that you find alternate storage methods to protect your data, such as CD or DVD, moving common files to “L” drive, etc.  The “L” drive is a shared storage space with groups, such as departments or divisions.  The “K” drive is a shared storage space for the campus.  If you have any questions about the purpose of the drives, please call the Help Desk at X244

Library Website

John Crissinger, Head Librarian, has been working all summer to produce a new library web site.  Please visit it at http://www.newarkcampus.org/library/

The site is designed to be informative, navigable and useful for faculty, students and staff.

Tel Center Services

The Tel Center stands ready to provide you with services to make your job easier and more effective.  Web site design, power point production, scanning, video production, and more are available.  Please contact me X379 if you would like to discuss a project.

Campus Wiring

Over the summer, ITS completed an extensive wiring project in Founders Hall.  This is part of the overall campus wiring upgrade that will allow the campus easier, faster access to services.

Media Support Services

The summer has brought many changes to this active department.  Marie Dacus has moved to the Services Center after providing Media Support Services with many excellent years of service.  Congratulations to Marie on her move!

Gary Edwards will continue to provide you with the Media Support Services that you expect.  If you need to order videos from the Media Support Services, you will find a complete list at http://www.newarkcampus.org/its/mediasupport/

Just call Gary or Media Support Services at X218.  The library will assist you if you need videos ordered from another library, from Main Campus libraries or if you need to order a video to purchase.

Gary and his staff will continue to provide A/V equipment and deliver it to your classroom.  We now have LAPTOPS and DOCUMENT CAMERAS for use in the classroom.

If you are full time faculty and need to borrow a laptop for classroom use, we ask that you leave your campus ID with us when you borrow a laptop.  If you are adjunct or part-time faculty, we ask that you leave your driver’s license with us when you pick up the laptop. Call X218 to reserve the laptop or document camera for your classroom.

If you need TV/VCR, Camcorders, audio cassette players, LCD/Laptop carts, and more, please call X218.

TechConnect

ITS is happy to announce that this Autumn students at COTC and OSU-N will have student-to-student technical help.  In every open lab, F106A, F180, F174 and R206, students will just need to ask a TechConnect representative (lab monitor) their questions about software, hardware, campus services, financial aid, email and  etc.

Thank you to all the departments on campus for providing training for the students.  All the TechConnect representatives are required to take a WebCT training course that they can then use for reference.

The TechConnect representatives are working hard to help students be successful at our campus.  They offer a TechConnect email address to all students so that they can ask for help from on campus or from home;

Techconnect@cotc.edu

Techconnect@newark.ohio-state.edu

TechConnect also offers tutoring to students in software programs so that they can complete assignments without undue stress over the tools they are using.

Please visit the TechConnect website for more information:  http://www.newarkcampus.org/Departmental/TechConnectweb/default.htm

Newark Campus Accounts/ Pay to Print

Speaking of changes, Newark Campus Accounts are now the key to access for students, staff and faculty.  Use your Newark Campus username and password in any multimedia room on campus and you will have direct access to your H drive.  That means you can save your presentations to your H drive, enter a multimedia room, log in and your H drive will be on the desktop of that computer.  Open it, choose your presentation, and go!

Remember if you are in a laptop connection room, that you can run all your presentations directly from the laptop to the projector.

Your username and password is also your key to the wireless network.  When your laptop is undocked, click on your browser and a login screen will appear.  Login using your username and password and you are automatically on the wireless.

Please remember to log out each time you use your Newark Campus Account in a multimedia room or in an open lab.  If you do not log out, the next user will have access to all your files stored on the H drive.

Soon we will be announcing an easy way for you to access your H drive from home!

Students must now use their Newark Campus Accounts for lab computer login, wireless access, and access to their storage space on the server.  Please see http://www.newarkcampus.org/its/students.asp

And click on Student Accounts if you want more information.

Pay to Print will be active in the library, F106A, F180, F174 and R206 the second week of the quarter.  All students, both COTC and OSU-N, are given 100 free copies per quarter. They may add money to the COTC campus ID or BuckID by visiting Fees and Deposits or by visiting the BuckID website at https://buckid.osu.edu/index.asp

Wireless

ITS keeps making things easier!  Now, just undock that laptop, click on your browser and a login screen pops up.  Type in your username and password and you are on the wireless!

If adjunct faculty or visitors to your classes need access to the wireless, come to the Help Desk in F196 and we will be happy to give them a guest account. (Please call us in advance for Mac user access to the wireless)

Spam

Spam continues to be a significant problem to all technology users.  Currently, there is not an enterprise or campus-wide solution.  ITS continues to explore options for this bothersome problem, but budget constraints have not yet allowed the campus to move forward with an enterprise solution.  You can configure your email client to help control spam, but it can be cumbersome to keep up.  If you have overwhelming problems, please call the Help Desk X244 for suggestions.

Deep Freeze – Watch Out!

ITS has installed in Deep Freeze on all open lab and multimedia room computers.  This program increases the reliability of the machines by keeping them clean of viruses, bad files, etc.  Please be aware – you may not save anything on the C drive of desktop of a multimedia or open lab computer since Deep Freeze automatically deletes all information saved to the computer each time it is turned off.  All the open lab computers and multimedia room computers are rebooted each evening when updates and virus scans are performed.

Please do not save anything of value to the desktop or hard drive of the open lab or multimedia room computers.  Save to a flash drive or burn to a CD.

Adjunct Faculty

This campus hosts many adjunct faculty members teaching a multitude of classes for OSU-N and COTC.  If you have a chance, please pass this email on to them or send them to the Help Desk if they have questions.  They will need to log on to the multimedia computers differently and they will need to get a Newark Campus username and password to use the wireless.

ITS wants to serve all the faculty and staff, so please let everyone know where they can get answers to their questions about technology.

As you can see, ITS has been very busy this summer.  We look forward to an exciting and challenging Autumn quarter.  Please let us know how we can work with you to improve your and your students’ experiences on the campus.
