Early Childhood Development Technology - Philosophy
The child development model of the COTC Associate
Degree Early Childhood Development program emphasizes the following
practices.
-
Development of the whole child including
curriculum planning that comprises all aspects of the child’s growth
in language, cognition, large and small motor skills, social
development, emotional growth and aesthetic appreciation.

Encouragement and promotion of play as a
valid means through which the child integrates knowledge, skills,
values and dispositions.

A balanced learning environment, with
materials and activities which promote the following: indoor and out
door interest areas, choices for children based on individual and
group needs, places for active play and places for quiet times.

A balance of learning experiences with a
rhythm for the day. The routine is flexible and consistent with the
child development model. Written planning is also flexible which
acts as a guide for the teachers and children. Teachers nurture the
child’s intellectual development. Children and families are at the
center of the curriculum.

Intentional planning and teaching is
facilitated through collaboration and reflective practices.
Children play a significant role in the planning with their
interests as a guide enabling them to develop positive dispositions
towards learning, friendships and self-confidence. All children are
included in the classroom community.

Continuous early childhood professional
development, reflective teaching practices knowledge of family and
child development, demonstration of skills in teaching young
children and adherence to a professional code of ethics regarding
confidentiality and child guidance, guide the academic program for
pre-service teachers.
