Program Learning Outcomes

Statement of Purpose

 

The purpose of the Accounting Technology program is to prepare qualified, competent accountants for entry-level positions to help fulfill the community's needs for accountants in a wide variety of business and not-for-profit organizational settings.

 

Learning Outcomes

 

At the completion of the Accounting Technology plan of study the student will be able to:

 

1.

Determine the appropriate calculations for solving diverse accounting problems and perform the computations necessary for their solution.

2.

Analyze accounting problems and communicate solutions both orally and in writing.

3.

Perform all steps in the accounting cycle for service, merchandising, and manufacturing operations for sole proprietorships and corporations.

4.

Analyze financial statements from a management viewpoint and critique financial statements from an outsider’s point of view.

5.

Record cost accounting transactions and prepare appropriate production reports and financial statements.

6.

Communicate with clients in order to assemble tax information and then prepare federal, state, and local income returns for individuals.

7.

Process a payroll by maintaining payroll records, preparing payroll journal entries and completing various quarterly and annual tax forms.

8.

Set up and employ appropriate computerized accounting and financial software to solve accounting problems.

9.

Describe the underlying concepts of the financial statement auditing process and apply those concepts to an auditing engagement.

10.

Analyze and record state and local governmental transactions.  Prepare and evaluate state and local governmental financial statements.

11.

Research accounting, tax, auditing and business issues.
