Newark, OH – The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) is hosting a program called "The Old Home: Louis Sullivan's Newark Bank," as presented by Dr. Joseph Tebben.
The presentation is a comprehensive account of the Newark Bank, one of Sullivan's eight "jewel box" banks. It places the aesthetics of the building in the context of Sullivan's time and his philosophy of "form ever follows function."
Dr. Tebben's illustrated lecture will focus on the fruitful collaboration of renowned architect Louis Sullivan and local banker Emmet Baugher, their parallel lives, and the remarkable structure their partnership gave to the city of Newark. There will also be a film viewing— Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture.
Dr. Tebben has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Duquesne University, a master's degree in linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D. in Classics from The Ohio State University. He taught Greek, Latin and Classics on the Newark and Columbus Campuses of Ohio State for 38 years. He retired in 2007. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Licking County Historical Society.
The LLI offers a year-round menu of programs, including lectures, book discussions, field trips, a film-study series, and workshops covering a variety of topics, ranging from history, arts, science, spirituality, and literature, to philosophy, languages, technology, economics, and local, national, and world affairs. It is a peer-led and membership-driven organization, offering an average of 18-20 programmatic options per semester. It is managed by the Workforce Development Innovation Center (WDIC) at COTC.
