Data Informed Planning Drives COTC Continuous Improvement

NEWARK, Ohio, Jan. 18, 2017—Throughout 2018, Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) will highlight the important work done by its Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (IRE). Working collaboratively with departments across the college, IRE tracks, monitors and disseminates data and information to accomplish the college's goals and continue its mission. Institutional effectiveness relates to the extent to which an institution achieves its mission and goals. At COTC, this is accomplished through a continual process of planning and outcomes assessment to document that the college is both achieving its mission and goals and continuously improving its programs and services. Each month COTC will highlight the work of IRE with a new "Fantastic Fact."

"To be successful we must be strategic and forward-thinking in every aspect of administration and management," said COTC President Bonnie L. Coe, Ph.D. "At COTC, research and effectiveness are interconnected. It is the essential work of this department that provides the data-driven foundation for continuous improvement across every department at the college."

IRE is responsible for providing the college leadership with information that supports institutional planning, policy formation and decision making.

Institutional research activities include:

  • Provide college data to federal, state and other external agencies
  • Provide leadership and support for the college's accreditation review cycles
  • Provide college and peer data to faculty and staff committees, academic and administrative leaders, and the Board of Trustees
  • Compile, analyze and interpret statistical data to support planning efforts by college administrators and committees
  • Manage dissemination of campus-wide surveys, including alumni, employees, faculty and graduating students

 Effectiveness activities include:

  • Design and implement projects to assess student learning
  • Support academic and administrative departments by facilitating the cycle of assessment processes and reports for institutional effectiveness
  • Provide data for program review process including enrollment, technical-credit hours earned and degrees-granted
  • Support grant project evaluation.
