5th Annual High School Egg Drop Competition April 28

NEWARK, Ohio, April 27, 2017 – Dropping an egg is normally considered a bad thing. Tomorrow, it will be welcome at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC). The 5th annual High School Egg Drop Competition is being held on April 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the John Gilbert Reese Center, 1209 University Drive, Newark, OH 43055, on the shared campus of COTC and The Ohio State University at Newark. The competition is put on by COTC's engineering technology department.

2015EggDrop2_lr.jpgThe egg drop competition is a classic engineering experiment. The objective of the competition is to design a device that will protect an egg from breaking when it is dropped from a height of approximately 22 feet. Entrants compete to design the device with the lightest weight, the fewest number of parts and the most accurate fall to the drop zone target.

In 2016, more than 400 central Ohio high school students participated. The competition encourages ingenuity and innovation in high school students who have an interest in engineering, but it is also open to those students who plan on pursuing education outside of engineering after high school.

The 2017 event is being sponsored by two $1,000 prize sponsors (MPW Industrial Services and the Newark Army Recruiting Center), one $1,000 trophy sponsor (Owens Corning), one $1,000 backpack sponsor (UMD Automated Systems), one $500 VIP room sponsor (ADR & Associates), and eight $300 general event sponsors (Ampacet Corporation, Licking Memorial Hospital, McWane Ductile, ms consultants, Packaging Corporation of America, Inc., Park National Bank, Screen Machine Industries, and Weekley Electric, LLC).

COTC was ranked number one in Ohio and number 19 in the nation by PayScale in its 2016-17 College Salary Report ranking the best community and career colleges by salary potential. COTC is a fully accredited, public college dedicated to providing high-quality, accessible programs of technical education in response to current and emerging employment needs. COTC is the only technical college in Ohio operating four full-service campus locations: Newark, Coshocton, Knox and Pataskala.
