Become a Part-time Instructor
 

Thank you for your interest in teaching part-time with Central Ohio Technical College (COTC). COTC serves Licking, Coshocton and Knox counties through its campuses at Newark, Coshocton, Mt. Vernon and Pataskala.  COTC offers degree and certificate programs in today’s hottest career fields and is one of the most technologically advanced campuses in the country. 

The positions listed on this web page are the areas that are the most in demand.  This does not mean there is a position currently available; rather, it means that, as our enrollment increases, these are the areas that will most likely require additional part-time faculty. 

Application Procedures:

Each academic dean hires part-time faculty per department as needed.  Applications for part-time faculty members are accepted on an ongoing basis and may be downloaded at http://www.cotc.edu/Departmental/HR/employment.asp, or call (740) 366-9367 to request that an employment application be mailed to you.  A complete application packet must include the following items:

  • Completed COTC application (signed and dated), including the subject you are hoping to instruct.
  • Copies of transcripts (unofficial copies are permitted for the selection process).
  • Detailed resume summarizing educational preparation and experience.

Applications for part-time teaching positions are reviewed by each academic department and remain on file for two years.  As class assignments become available, the hiring department may contact you to request your official transcripts and additional information.  To build a diverse workforce, COTC encourages applications from individuals with disabilities, minorities, veterans, and women. 

COTC Teaching Requirement: A part-time faculty member is a COTC instructor who holds a contract for fewer than 12 contact hours during any quarter of the regular academic year.  Part-time faculty should hold a degree at least one level above that of the program in which they are teaching.  Those teaching general education courses typically hold a master’s degree or higher and should have completed substantial graduate coursework, equivalent to 18 quarter hours, in the discipline of those courses.  In some cases, such as in practice-oriented, occupational program courses, the college also considers competence, effectiveness, and capacity, including, as appropriate, undergraduate and graduate degrees, related work experiences in the field, professional licensure and certifications, honors and awards, continuous documented excellence in teaching, or other demonstrated competencies and achievements that contribute to effective teaching and student learning outcomes.  Please see exceptions listed below per program discipline:

Minimum Requirement Exceptions per Program Discipline:

NURSING: Master’s Degree in Nursing, Ohio RN license, and recent clinical experience required. Will consider candidates who are within two semesters of completing an MSN degree.  Prior teaching experience is preferred.

CLINICAL NURSING – Associate Degree Nursing Program – Teaching Assistant: BSN required, MSN preferred.  Must possess current active licensure as a registered nurse in Ohio. Minimum of two years recent clinical experience; prior teaching experience preferred.  Assignments available in adult, behavioral health, maternity and pediatric nursing. 

CLINICAL NURSING – Practical Nursing Program – Teaching Assistant:  Completion of an approved registered nursing education program. BSN preferred. Must possess current active licensure as a registered nurse in Ohio. At least two years recent clinical experience as a registered nurse; prior teaching experience preferred.  Assignments available in adult medical surgical nursing.

DIGITAL MEDIA DESIGN: Bachelor’s degree preferred with emphasis on multimedia/graphics and/or advertising.  Three years experience in field desired with in-depth knowledge of one or more of the following programs: Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, Quark, Illustrator or Premiere.

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY:  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of Associate’s degree and experience.  Appropriately credentialed sonographer.  Minimum of 3 years of scanning experience appropriate to position.  Previous instructional experience preferred. 

EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES:  Current and valid certificate to teach issued by the Division of EMS.  Minimum of 5 years of experience.

RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY:  Credentialed as an R.T.(R).  Associate Degree in Radiographic Technology.  Baccalaureate degree preferred.  Minimum of two years recent experience in practice as a registered radiologic technologist. 

SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY: Associate Degree from accredited Surgical Technology Program; minimum 4 years scrubbing experience and certification in Surgical Technology required. 

COTC Part-time Faculty Salary Schedule

The rate of pay per contact hour for part-time faculty is based upon the degree that the part-time faculty member has earned by the date of hire.  The rates of pay for the 2006-2007 academic year are listed below:

Employment contracts issued to part-time faculty are subject to the sufficiency of Legislative appropriations and the pertinent provisions of the Revised Code of Ohio and the official actions of the Board of Trustees.  The contract creates no expectation of future employment, and the College maintains sole discretion in choosing to offer or not offer future teaching opportunities.  Part-time faculty are paid bi-weekly after all necessary paperwork has been submitted to the Office of Human Resources.  A part-time faculty member is not eligible to receive benefits.  Part-time faculty are required to participate in the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS).
