The U.S. Department of Labor states that job opportunities for RNs in all specialties are expected to be excellent. The current healthcare environment is shifting, resulting in a shortage of RNs in many areas.  This means the associate degree RN is needed to help fill the RN vacancies.  In fact, projections indicate that registered nurses will create the second largest number of new jobs among all occupations over the next several years. Thousands of job openings also will result from the need to replace experienced nurses who leave the occupation, especially as the median age of the registered nurse population continues to rise.
